160 years of Railways in India – Google Doodle

Today’s Google Doodle is quite interesting since it’s an Indian Theme. It’s been 160 years since the first passenger train service was started in India. In fact, the first passenger train service started on 16th April 1853 between Mumbai and Thane.

From those beginnings 160 years back, today it’s the 4th largest railway system in the world. Another interesting fact is that only in 1951 was the railway system in India nationalized as the the Indian Railways. At that point in time there were more than 42 different railway systems running in India, some run by private companies and others by the various states.
